There are many tried and tested natural remedies for ailments and alternative medicines to consider.
This list is by no means exhaustive, however will give you some ideas when you are looking for an alternative.

1. Echinacea

Also known as echinacea purpurea, helps support a healthy immune system and has both
antibacterial and antibiotic properties. If you start to feel something coming on, dosing yourself with echinacea is a good way to help you stay healthy. At the very least, you won’t stay sick as long. It works well in conjunction with vitamin C.

2. Goldenseal 

Goldenseal, also known as Hydrastis Canadensis, is a powerful antibacterial, antibiotic, and anti-10+ Alternative Natural Medicines To Treat Common Issuesparasitical potion.  It comes in a variety of forms, capsules, powder and liquid.

4. Arnica

Also known as arnica montana, Arnica is commonly found in two forms, either as a gel or in homeopathic pellets. The gel, when used externally, is wonderful for removing bruises, bringing down puffiness or swelling, and easing deep aches.  It has a soothing effect and is preferred for use on sensitive skin.

5. Tea Tree Oil

Also known as melaleuca alternifolia, tea tree oil is native to Australia.  The tea tree plant produces a powerful astringent oil with a strong camphorous aroma. It should always be diluted in water, as a few drops goes a long way.

It can be used to cleanse scratches and abrasions, to clean the face and in a neti pot to clean the sinuses. It can also reduce skin irritations, especially of the fungal variety.

6. Bach’s Rescue Remedy

Bach’s, a British company, sells a popular blend of five flower essences called Rescue Remedy and it is useful for just about everything.

7. Licorice Tea

If you love licorice, you will love this tea.  It is naturally sweet, and is super if you have a sore throat.  It is all natural with no preservatives or artificial ingredients. Each blend can vary slightly. A hint of cinnamon, ginger and pepper adds a touch of warmth to the blend, while the orange, clove and cardamom boost the spicy sweetness of the tea.

8. Clove Oil

This little spice packs a mighty aromatic punch, its real use is as a numbing agent. In dental emergencies, diluted clove oil can numb the gums, mouth, and teeth. It also may help keep tooth infections from spreading, as clove has anti-bacterial properties. Always dilute clove oil in water prior to application, and although it can be used in the mouth it should not be ingested.

Also known as lavandula angustifolia, Lavender Oil is great for when you have a headache, are feeling low or just want to relax.  Lavender oil is easy to throw in your bag, and you can rub it on your temple, the pressure points on the inside of your wrists, and under your nose. Aromatherapy is a simple and effective way to help you maintain your emotional balance whilst on the move.

Just remember never to ingest lavender oil: it is toxic in such a concentrated form.

10 Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera Gel is an amazing natural product.  It helps promote healing when your skin is burnt, and soothes skin.  It forms a protective barrier to retain moisture and can also be used as a shaving or hair styling gel.

11. Peppermint and Spearmint Oil

Peppermint and spearmint oil can help a variety of conditions.

Peppermint oil will clear the sinuses and can help minimise migraine headaches, and is also great for sore muscles. Spearmint will also help to address headaches, but is especially effective where the headaches is caused by tension, even if it’s progressed into a migraine. It not only soothes sore muscles but relaxes them as well, so if the soreness is caused by tension, it can provide real relief.


There are literally hundreds of alternative, natural alternatives that can be used to address bites, skin irritations and deter bugs. Have you ever tried epsom salts for sore muscles, sea salt for sore throats and abrasions, clay for gently cleansing sunburned skin, or jojoba oil for anything that needs it?

Some people swear by a mixture of raw honey and vinegar in warm water for vomiting and colds. 1-2 tablespoons each of raw honey and raw cider vinegar (or any raw vinegar will do) in a cup of warm water.
